This Kalamkari-Kani design takes its border from the mihrab arch, the pointed archway found throughout Mughal architecture. The arches line each end like a row of carved windows, each holding a single flowering stem. Above them, the body is scattered with paisleys that give the indigo room to breathe, gathering towards a central panel softened with hints of sage and mauve. It's woven on a double-beam loom, which uses two sets of warp threads to build a tighter, fuller weave. That's what gives the pattern its crisp definition and the shawl its weight. Each piece is finished by hand, so small variations in weave and colour are a signature of the maker rather than a flaw.
