Nalki is a traditional Kashmiri embroidery style made up of dense, slightly raised stitches that give each motif texture and depth. This is a jama stole, which means the embroidery covers almost the whole body of the shawl. On this piece, golden marigold rosettes, deep red lotus motifs and swirling heart-shaped paisleys bloom across the ivory ground on trailing olive vines, with tiny autumn leaves scattered between them. A fine black line frames the central field. A wide embroidered border and a red scrolled edging run around it, and the plain ivory ends with soft fringing let the colour take centre stage.
