Sozni is the finest of the embroidery styles - needlework so close that the design sits almost flat against the cloth. On this shawl, coral and peach paisleys (buta) sit within a dense jaal of leaves and tiny blossoms in sage green, marigold and blush. The layout comes from the Jamawar shawls once woven for Mughal courts. A scalloped border in marigold and green frames the embroidered field, and the ends are left plain so the soft lilac of the wool can show. Each piece is finished by hand, so small variations in weave and colour are a signature of the maker rather than a flaw.
