Nalki is a traditional Kashmiri hand-embroidery technique. Artisans work the design stitch by stitch with the needle, building dense, slightly raised motifs that stand out from the cloth. On this shawl, a royal procession moves across the mustard wool: elephants in decorated saddle cloths, camels, peacocks, and dancers and musicians mid-step, all linked by winding pink vines and teal blossoms. A row of caparisoned elephants in fuchsia and red marches along each end of the embroidered field, framed by a paisley border and a floral fringe in ivory and red. Every motif is done by hand, so each piece carries the small variations of its maker.
