Sozni is the finest of the embroidery styles - needlework so close that the design sits almost flat against the cloth. Fine stitches worked across the cloth to build motifs that look almost painted. Here, rows of maroon and rust paisleys (buta) sit within a dense jaal of leaves and tiny flowers in moss green, copper and ivory. It is a layout taken from the Jamawar shawls once woven for Mughal courts. A scalloped floral border frames the embroidered field, and the ends are left plain so the colour of the wool can show. Each piece is finished by hand, so small variations in weave and colour are a signature of the maker rather than a flaw.
