Rather than building out from a single centre, this Kalamkari-Kani design repeats in columns. Rows of paisley pairs curl around apricot diamond medallions, and a border of flame-orange paisleys runs around the edge. The ends are finished with a striped border in peacock, olive, plum, rust and charcoal, a traditional detail that turns the edge of the shawl into a feature when it falls over the shoulder. It's woven on a double-beam loom, which uses two sets of warp threads to build a tighter, fuller weave. That's what gives the pattern its crisp definition and the shawl its weight. Each piece is finished by hand, so small variations in weave and colour are a signature of the maker rather than a flaw.
