Nalki is a traditional Kashmiri embroidery style made up of dense, slightly raised stitches that give each motif texture and depth. On this shawl, crimson roses bloom across the cool mint ground, surrounded by olive leaves and ivory sprays on fine red vines. A deep border of teal and red buds and ivory paisleys runs above each end, finished with a delicate leaf-tip edging, and the plain mint ends let the embroidery take centre stage. Every motif has a slight variation which is down to threadwork, so each piece carries the small variations of its maker.
